Learning outcomes The objective of this course is to provide students with an integrated view of the impact of chronic or accidental marine pollution on the functioning of marine ecosystems.

Lectures and tutorials:

  • Overview of marine pollution and the major classes of xenobiotics
  • Impact of pollution on marine ecosystems Biological effects on organisms, populations and communities.
  • Response of marine organisms to the presence of pollutants (from molecular and biochemical aspects to ecophysiology)
  • Monitoring of marine pollution; tools (biomarkers) and programs
  • Basics of toxicology and chemical risk assessment in the marine environment

PRACTICALS:

  • Cadmium toxicity involving oysters (Crassostrea gigas)
