We are looking for one

Post-doctoral position in physical oceanography and geochemistry (LOPS)

Post-doctorate

L’Université de Bretagne Occidentale is a public institution of a scientific, cultural and professional nature (EPSCP), rich in its diversity in terms of training and research fields. It works for the production of knowledge, its transmission and its valorization. Committed to the heart of the city, it contributes to the training of free and responsible citizens, in accordance with humanist values: responsibility, respect, integrity, inclusion and solidarity.
With 23,000 students, 1,300 professors and researchers, and 900 administrative and technical staff, UBO is a local university with national and international influence.
UBO concentrates a large part of its activities on the Brest site, but it is also present in the north (Morlaix) and south (Quimper) of Finistère and extends to the whole of Brittany with the sites of the Institut National Supérieur du Professorat et de l'Education in Rennes, Vannes and St Brieuc. UBO is also part of the SEA-EU European University which brings together nine partner universities : the University of Cadiz (Spain), the University of Kiel (Germany), the University of Gdansk (Poland), the University of Split (Croatia), the University of Malta, the University of Bodo (Norway), the University of Faro (Portugal) and the University of Naples (Italy). This alliance aims to strengthen the mobility of students and university staff and to improve the quality, inclusiveness and competitiveness of European higher education.
UBO is looking for talented men and women to ensure its public service mission and contribute to its influence.

The Physical and Spatial Oceanography Laboratory (LOPS) is a Joint Research Unit under the supervision of the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), the French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea (Ifremer), the Institute of Research for Development (IRD) and the Université de Bretagne Occidentale (UBO). It is also a laboratory of the European University Institute of the Sea (IUEM). As a research unit, LOPS develops and participates in research programs in oceanography that contribute to the development of knowledge on ocean dynamics at different time and space scales and that study the relationships of the ocean with other compartments of the Earth system such as the atmosphere, cryosphere, continental surfaces and living organisms. The person recruited will work within the scientific team "Ocean Scales Interactions" of LOPS. They will work in close collaboration with the Geo-ocean.

The postdoctoral researcher will work within the LifeDeeper Priority Research Program, which seeks to develop a better understanding of deep-sea hydrothermal environments in the areas of geochemistry, benthic ecology, geology, and physical oceanography to provide a better fundamental understanding of these systems and to help establish environmental and monitoring guidelines and protection plans.
They will design and run a suite of numerical simulations of ocean circulation using the CROCO model coupled with a simplified biogeochemical model (PISCES) in an Atlantic region encompassing the TAG hydrothermal field. The concentrations of variables constrained by observations will be initialized and forced continuously at the TAG active site. Their fate, i.e., transport and mixing by physical processes as well as simple geochemical processes, will be studied on large time (1-100 days) and space (1-1000 km) scales. The researcher will evaluate the realism of the simulated physical and geochemical fields by comparing them to observed data sets in order to refine the setup before running it over long time scales. Diagnostics on the model outputs will serve as a basis for obtaining a qualitative and quantitative picture of the key physical and geochemical processes involved in compound dispersion at different time and space scales. For example, the model will help answer questions such as "what hydrodynamic mechanisms explain the dispersal patterns?" and "what is the average hydrothermal Fe concentration 100 km east of TAG?"

The project is conducted in collaboration with scientists at the national and international level.
The candidate will present his/her results at national and international conferences and workshops.
The candidate will produce publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

• PhD in physical oceanography
• Strong skills in numerical modeling of ocean circulation (CROCO is a plus)
• Basic knowledge or at least curiosity about geochemical processes in the ocean. However, no a priori knowledge is required
• Strong writing skills to convey scientific ideas in the form of peer-reviewed publications and oral presentations at international conferences.
