The Doctoral School of Marine and Coastal Sciences (SML) is multidisciplinary and draws on research laboratories of excellence. It aims to train specialists in their discipline who are capable of working in a multidisciplinary scientific context. Hosted and housed at the IUEM, this doctoral school contributes to the development of a culture in marine sciences that also extends to human and social sciences.
It has around 230 doctoral students across three sites (mainly UBO, but also UBS and the Institut Agro Rennes-Angers). The EDSML draws on 22 specialities, a dozen research structures, three associated institutions (IFREMER Bretagne, SHOM and the Naval Academy) and 180 holders of a HDR (habilitation à diriger des recherches, or accreditation to supervise research).
