International perspectives

The internationalisation of education at IUEM has led to the signing of conventions for international inter-university cooperation, including agreements to co-supervise PhDs, offer joint degrees or organise exchanges for Master students. In the 2012-2013 academic year, 19 international students from 11 different countries attended IUEM Masters’ courses, representing around 10% of the total. In addition to these students enrolled for degrees at IUEM, there are also students who study at IUEM via Eramus agreements with the following universities and higher education colleges:

  • Antwerp Maritime Academy (Belgium);
  • University of Liège (Belgium);
  • University of Cadiz (Spain);
  • University of Séville (Spain);
  • University of Vigo (Spain)
  • University of Florence (Italy)
  • University of Lisbon (Portugal)
  • University of Bucharest (Romania)

The institute also coordinates international teaching programs, such as the Master in Marine Physics, and the joint degree Master in Marine and Coastal Sciences in partnership with Diponegoro University in Semarang, Indonesia. IUEM is also a founder member of the International Antarctic Institute (IAI). At the Doctoral School of Marine Sciences, international doctoral students represent slightly over a quarter of the total number of students, as shown in the pie chart below.

Over the last 10 years, 38 co-supervised PhDs have been organised in collaboration with the following countries: Algeria, Germany, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Italy, Morocco, Switzerland and Tunisia. This list demonstrates not only the extent of IUEM’s international involvement but also the geographic diversity of its partners.

Study Abroad

If you are a student at IUEM and would like to go abroad as part of your studies, there are several ways of doing this:

- Placements organised as part of the Erasmus programme. If you would like to study abroad in one of our partner universities, please ask your course director for more details.

- Master 1 or Master 2 placements: If you would like to do your Master internship abroad, then mobility grants are available. For more information, contact Valérie Stiger-Pouvreau, the IUEM international relations coordinator.

International Students

If you would like to study at IUEM as an international student, this can be organised in a number of ways:

- On an independent basis without a cooperation agreement. In this case, you should follow the usual student admissions procedure

- As part of an Erasmus agreement between your university and IUEM

- As an internship in one of the IUEM research laboratories
