IUEM laboratories


At IUEM there are six joint research unit laboratories (UMR), each uniting scientists from several institutions.  There is also an associated laboratory at the University of South Brittany:

      Laboratory of Ocean Physics ( LPO : UBO - CNRS - Ifremer - IRD)

          The LPO was founded on January 1st 1991. Its scientific objectives are to increase knowledge of the mechanisms that control ocean dynamics on different spatial and temporal scales, particularly along three research tracks: (1) the LPO_6523.pngmechanisms of ocean dynamics, from the sub-meso scale to that of whole basins; (2) climatic changes: the role of the ocean and impacts of thermohaline circulation; (3) understanding coastal-high seas exchanges to examine the regionalisation of climate change impacts on the borders and ecosystems.  The research of the LPO combines a number of approaches: oceanographic campaigns to study processes and monitor oceanic variability, sometimes with the development of specific technology; exploration and quantification of the dynamic ocean from observations: development of techniques for validation, statistical quantification and databases for the laboratory and worldwide scientific community, both historic and real time (ARGO), academic modelling for study of processes and ocean functioning and realistic modelling for simulation of ocean responses to climatic variability and regional impacts.

            Marine Environmental Sciences Laboratory (LEMAR : UBO - CNRS - IRD - Ifremer)

              Founded in 1991, the LEMAR brings together biologists, chemists and physicists with the objectives of understanding and modelling the marine systems of the biosphere, defining the characteristics of environments and organisms, and describing their interactions in detail.  Its strong multidisciplinary approach is essential for research on the highly complex interactions between components of the marine environment.  The unit’s interdisciplinary policy is built on a sound basis of skills in the relevant scientific disciplines and an integration of this approach into its daily activities.

              Oceanic Domains Laboratory (LDO : UBO - CNRS)

              Oceanic Domains is a research laboratory where research activities focus on the origins and evolution of oceanic domains. Its multidisiplinary approach covers the fields of structurDomaines_Oceaniques_6538.pngal geology, geophysics, petrology, isotopic geochemistry, sedimentology and palaeontology. Its areas of study include continental rifts, ocean ridges, continental platforms, deep basins, hotspots and volcanic islands, passive and active margins. There are nearly 80 people working in the laboratory, including 35 researchers and lecturers, 19 engineers, technicians and administrative personnel, around 20 PhD students and a few post-doctorate researchers and visitors.

              Microbiology of Extreme Environments ( LM2E : UBO - CNRS - Ifremer)

              LM2E, founded on January 1st 2004, conducts research programs on the microbiology of extreme environments, particularly oceanic ones. This work is based on the organisation and execution logo lm2e.jpgof oceanographic campaigns in partnership with biologists, chemists and geochemists of extreme environments: hydrothermal vents, cold seeps at continental margins of the ocean floor. The laboratory actively participates in work to help us understand how the microorganisms of this environment contribute to the function of these extreme habitats and how they maintain the integrity of their genetic material under such conditions. The equipment and skills of the laboratory for sampling, analysis and exploitation of microbial samples are unique in France. For sampling operations, the laboratory has regular access to the national oceanographic fleet, according to standard campaign selection procedure.

              GEOMER (LETG Brest – Géomer : UBO - CNRS)


              The GEOMER laboratory is the Brest-based part of the UMR Coast, Environment, Remote Sensing and Geomatics (UMR LETG), which is made of four geography research groups spread throGEOMER_6554.pngughout western France.  Géomer belongs to the Institute of Ecology and Environment (INEE) and the Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences (INSHS) of the CNRS.  Its research activities all belong to the vast field of human geography, physical geography and geomatics.  They concern the coastal environment of temperate and tropical environments. The origins of its researchers and engineers (cartography, ecology, geography, geology), like the initiation of collaborations between the disciplines of the human sciences, sciences of the universe and physical sciences for engineering made the team strongly multidisiplinary.

              Centre for the Law and Economics of the Sea (Amure : UBO - Ifremer)


              AMURE was founded in January 2008, by the association of Ifremer’s Department of Marine Economics and UBO’s Centre for Maritime Law and Economics. Its central objective is the economiamure_fr.jpgc and judicial analysis of public policies concerning maritime activities and marine and coastal areas. AMURE brings together a group of more than 35 researchers and lecturers in law and economics, making it an important centre for research and training though research on the issues of sustainable development of maritime activities and on the public policies associated with such issues and their impacts on the evolution of uses of these ecosystems.

              Marine Biotechnology and Chemistry Laboratory (LBCM : UBS)


              Founded in 1998 at the University of South Brittany (UBS), the Marine Biotechnology and Chemistry Laboratory  (LBCM) has been associated with the European LBCM-logoQuadriHautedef.jpgInstitute of Marine Studies (IUEM) since 2012.  Its research focuses on biofilms (organized populations of microorganisms that develop on surfaces) in the marine environment and on the applications of animal-derived molecules.  Around 30 people work at LBCM, pooling their complementary skills in biology and chemistry (microbiology, cellular and molecular biology, algology and analytical and physical chemistry).
