Hermatypic corals are experiencing mass bleaching event due to intensifying marine heat waves. As bleaching causes the loss of their primary energy source (photosynthetic symbionts), coral survival becomes dependent on their heterotrophic capacity. This project aims to determine the role of nutrient availability in enhancing corals’ tolerance to thermal stress. A transplantation experiment between oligotrophic and mesotrophic (nutrient-rich) reefs, followed by acute heat stress assays, will evaluate differences in physiological and isotopic characteristics based on the habitat.
