MYCTOPHIDAE, a travel in deep seas | A Festival Ressac exhibition

, ,

The oceans? A vastness, a wealth and one of the keys to the functioning of life on our planet. And yet the mysteries are still many. In this partially known world, lanternfish or myctophidae, are very abundant from the equator to the coldest areas, from the surface to several hundred metres deep.

Who are they, what do they look like, what are they doing there? How can we unravel the enigma of this environment that is impossible to observe with our eyes?

Led by Gildas Roudaut, some scientists (IRD, CNRS, MNHN, CPS) have initiated a dialogue with a class of Applied Arts (STD2A) of the Vauban High School in Brest.

These exchanges gave rise to an exhibition, MYCTOPHIDAE, presented at the IUEM, and a magazine, La Lanterne, created with the support of the UBO and the IRD as part of the Ressac Festival .

The exhibition can be visited at the Bibiothèque Universitaire du Bouguen (10, av. Victor le Gorgeu, Brest), from 18 November 2019 to 6 January 2020.

It is also available in pDF format (low resolution), on this page.

Si Quelque Chose Doit Surgir…

, ,

If Something Must Arise…

Behind this enigmatic title, Jean-Manuel Warnet offers us an immersive experience, at once sensory, literary, poetic and scientific.

Jean-Manuel is a lecturer in theatre studies at the UBO, he also teaches literature and directs the company Les Filles de la Pluie.

“Si Quelque Chose Doit Surgir…” is a radio creation that he wrote and produced with Victor Blanchard at the end of an artist residency on a scientific mission in Greenland with our colleagues from LIA BeBEST. First presented as a show, this creation is finally audible in its studio format, on the OUFIPO webradio site. You can listen to it in stereo, under headphones and wrapped up in a fleece. Plastik Panic in the ocean: the exhibition facing the harbor

,

Thursday 29 April 2021 was inaugurated the exhibition “Plastik Panic in the Ocean”, in the presence of three vice-presidents of Brest Métropole, members of LEMAR and the scientific mediation team of Océanopolis.

This exhibition of 16 large-format photographs has been installed on the Promenade du Moulin Blanc, outside Océanopolis. Free of charge and accessible to all walkers, it will remain visible, facing the most beautiful harbour in the world, that of Brest of course, until 7 November 2021.

From left to right: Ika PAUL-PONT, Yohann NEDELEC (vice-president of Brest métropole in charge of major projects), Arnaud HUVET, Tristan FOVEAU (vice-president of Brest métropole in charge of sustainable waste management), Laurent PERON (vice-president of Brest métropole in charge of the coast) and Erwan AMICE.

Combining scientific and artistic contributions, the aim of the exhibition is to raise awareness among as wide a public as possible of the problems of plastic pollution in our oceans and to support actions in favour of sober use and responsible consumption. The photographs on display show this pollution on our coastline, from the macro to the micro-waste, we follow the scientists from the sampling to the laboratory and end up with concrete solutions and ways to act. This scientific mediation and awareness-raising initiative is part of the objectives of the Preventing Plastic Pollution (PPP) project.

This exhibition is the result of a partnership between members of LEMAR and the scientific mediation teams of Océanopolis, with the support of Brest-Métropôle. We learned of the sudden death of its initiator, Anne Rognant a few days before this inauguration. We would like to pay tribute here to the inspiring woman she was, and to her immeasurable work for the sharing of knowledge.

RESSAC Festival from 16 to 22 November

,

The first edition of the Ressac festival (Research in the arts and creation sciences), proposed and organised by the cultural service of the UBO (University of Western Brittany), begins on Saturday 16 November with the project “Auris maris, une oreille de mer à l’écoute du changement climatique” at Océanopolis.

LEMAR participates in this project, in particular through the strong involvement of Christine Paillard (DR at CNRS), and the work of the last year of high school students at Lycée Vauban “Myctophidae : Voyage en eau profonde” supervised by Gildas Roudaut (AI at IRD).

This festival is also part of the 80th anniversary of the CNRS.

The festival is free and open to all.

ARCTIC BLUES, an exhibition

, ,

Returning from missions in Antarctica, biologists from Brest were asking themselves the question: how to tell their emotions about the beauty of the poles and the certainty of the disaster, in a context of scientific research?

In 2013, they propose to involve artists from all walks of life in their polar expeditions. For seven years, artists and scientists have shared missions in Arctic and sub-Arctic environments. This heterogeneous group has therefore lived in the same field between research, hesitation, failure and discovery.

The exhibition ARCTIC BLUES reflects the richness of this dialogue. Photography, video, installation, writing, sound creation, music and scientific frescoes respond to each other or collide to create a singular object: something like an attempt to blend art and science where both are revealed, with new, complementary and unpredictable colours. The exhibition highlights the shared doubts and the richness of the experiences lived during the round trips between the Brest harbour and the poles. The passer-by will discover a small part of the Ocean as well as one of the facets of the current oceanography developed in Brest over the past fifty years. ARCTIC BLUES testifies that at the tip of Brittany, improbable encounters and assertive curiosities allow the emergence of new ideas and perspectives.
This exhibition tour restores to the public seven years of research and residencies between artists and scientists within the associated BeBEST International Laboratory, a collaboration between the LEMAR laboratory (CNRS/Ifremer/ IRD/UBO) and ISMER in collaboration with the Muséum National d’Histoire naturelle.
