With the objective of comparing the levels of Cu,Cd, Zn and Hg in the digestive gland and the mantle of mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis and finding a possible correlation between this contamination and the filling degree (biometric index) in this animal, mussels with a 3 to 4 cm size were sampled in May and June 2004 from two areas: Hawzia and Jorf-Lasfar [Fig. 1]. The sampling sites are located at variable distances from urban and/or industrial effluents. Except for Zn, the results [Tables I & II; Fig. 2] show significant differences in the metal content between the two studied areas. Furthermore, these metals are more accumulated in the digestive gland than the mantle. The condition index is greater in the mussels from Hawzia.
