Etude de quelques aspects de la reproduction de Sardina pilchardus (Walbaum, 1792) de la région de Laâyoune (Maroc)
Bulletin de l'Institut Scientifique, Rabat, 26-27:43-50.
The reproductive biology of Sardina pilchardus has been studied from monthly samples taken from commercial landings of Moroccan purse seiners operating in the area of Lâayoune during the period January 1999 to December 2001. The present study shows that sardine could spread out all the year with the maximum of the sexual activity between November and February. The maximum of condition factor (K) corresponds to the month that precedes the starting of reproduction. This implies an accumulation of reserves by sardine before the reproduction period. The size at first sexual maturity (L50) is reached at 16,3 ±0,35 cm and 17,5 ±0,28 cm respectively for the males and the females. Sardine reproduces at temperatures between 16,3 °C and 18,9 °C. The temperature corresponding to the season of maximal reproduction differs from year to year. Variations of the condition factor (K) and the sexual cycle are in relation with upwelling phenomenon.
