The Blue ESGAP project aims to develop a dashboard to document the environmental sustainability of marine ecosystems in Indonesia and the Philippines, to facilitate an operational dialogue between science and public policies. It aims to complement ocean accounting by introducing a dashboard of synthetic indicators from a strong sustainability perspective, adopting strict criteria on the maintenance of critical natural capital. This project aims to extend the existing ESGAP (Environmental Sustainability Gap) framework to include other dimensions related to marine sustainability in both countries, considering source, sink, life support, and human health and welfare environmental functions. The ESGAP framework is based on assessing the difference between the current state of the natural capital stock and an environmental sustainability standard, which is described as the environmental sustainability gap for an environmental function. Collaboration with local stakeholders in Indonesia and the Philippines will allow us to create this dashboard and estimate the two composite indicators of the ESGAP framework: (1) a composite index for measuring strong sustainability against environmental sustainability targets, named Strong Environmental Sustainability Index (SESI), and (2) a composite index for measuring progress towards these targets, named Strong Environmental Sustainability Progress Index (SESPI).
