Education

  • 2019 – Habilitation thesis, University of Western Brittany
  • 2005 – Ph.D., Biological Oceanography, University of Western Brittany
  • 2001 – Master of Science in Marine Ecology, University of Western Brittany
  • 1998 – Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, University of Western Brittany & University of Rennes 1

I am working as Associate Professor at the University of Western Brittany since 2009, after a Ph.D. thesis carried out in New Caledonia, and two post-doctoral stays in the USA with Jim Cloern (US Geological Survey, Menlo Park, CA) then in Germany with Bernd Schöne (Johannes Gutenberg-Universität, Mainz). My research activities mainly focus on the description and understanding of the ecological functioning of coastal ecosystems.

Marine ecologist by training, I began to combine these skills with the thematic field of biogenic carbonate geochemistry during my Ph.D., and then immersed myself in the analysis of the composition of aquatic mollusc shells using state-of-the-art techniques generally used in geosciences (laser ablation, mass spectrometry ICP-MS and IR-MS). The coupling between these geochemical methods and the autoecology of mollusks allowed me to calibrate various proxies of environmental parameters archived in shells (e.g. temperature, phytoplankton dynamics), then to develop paleo-ecological and paleo-environmental reconstructions over periods ranging from a year (with a daily temporal resolution) to several centuries (annual resolution). Today, the core of my research activities still deals with extracting, analyzing and understanding structural (variation of growth increment width) and geochemical (variation of stable isotope ratios and elemental concentrations) proxies archived in mollusc shells from coastal ecosystems (Europe, Arctic, Antarctic, Pacific, West Africa). This scientific field is called “sclerochronology”, the aquatic equivalent of dendrochronology (study of tree rings). By extension, sclerochemistry is the sub-discipline of sclerochronology dealing with microchemical analyses performed in these structures.

The main objectives of my research activities are (i) to get information on life-history traits (of aquatic molluscs (bivalves and gastropodes), (ii) to assess past and present variability of environmental conditions (temperature, salinity, primary production, pollutions, etc.), and ultimately (iii) to describe and understand the ecological functioning of temperate, tropical and polar coastal ecosystems.

I am also a scientific diver, holding the Hyperbaric Aptitude Certificate (class 1, mention B), the Scientific Dive Leader qualification, and the Air Diluent Closed Circuit Rebreather (rEvo) certification.

Main scientific collaborations:

  • Prof. Melita Peharda, Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries, Split, Croatia
  • Prof Bernd R. Schöne, Johannes Gutenberg-Universität, Mainz, Germany

Annual growth lines in Arctica shells

Besides my research activities, I also teach at the University of Western Brittany, both at the Faculty of Sciences & Technology (Bachelor of Biology) and at the European Institute for Marine Studies (IUEM – Master Marine and Coastal Sciences). I teach (or used to) zoology, general ecology, functional biology, population dynamics, methods and practices in ecology, as well as a pinch of taxonomy to undergraduate students. At the Master 1 level, I teach population biology and more particularly its evolutionary aspects, conservation biology and ecology of polar and tropical environments. Finally, I initiate Master 2 students to environmental biological records, a teaching unit consisting of an introduction to sclerochronology and sclerochemistry of aquatic organisms. I also act as a tutor for graduate student internships, and supervise the research work of master and PhD students.
