The climate rooms are intended for experimental work as part of research projects. These rooms have the advantage of being near laboratories and LEMAR team offices.
They meet the necessary conditions for the maintenance of species within the framework of experiments of long duration. The air conditioning system keeps the temperature stable for values between 5 and 24°C. The sea water, pumped in the Brest harbour and filtered on sand, is distributed in all the rooms. Finally, the compressed air system provides the animals with the necessary oxygen. Depending on the space available, it is thus possible to keep species such as bivalves, abalone, echinoderms, jellyfish or crustaceans in stalls.
They can also be used for experiments of bacterial pathologies, contaminations by heavy metals or toxic algae. Following experiments of this type, the water is treated by chlorination then passes over several successive filters. According to experiments, it also passes through an activated carbon tank before evacuation.
These rooms are also used for the study and culture of algae micro or macroscopic. Light strips associated with a programming system make it possible to respect the photoperiod, necessary for their development. It is possible to grow them in small volumes to study the physiology of these algae. But also in large quantities to be used for the contamination or feeding of animal species.
The climatic rooms are highly adaptable according to needs. Equipment is thus stored in order to meet the various demands: freezers, climatic cabinets equipped with LED lighting, modular shelves, culture glassware... Various PVC containers with a volume of 3 to 300 L are available as well as cartridge filters (from 25 to 1 microns) to improve water purity. Concerning the lighting, the team has a whole range of special replacement fluorescent tubes and more mobile luminaires of different powers.
(The reservation of rooms and equipment can be made from the LEMAR's intranet.)
