Considering the sucess of the first course we organised The second course in Ecosystem Acoustics (theory and practice) from October 8-19, 2018 (60 h) in Recife, Brazil, as part of the Master and Ph.D. in Oceanography of the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE). The course was coordinated by Arnaud Bertrand (IRD / Marbec) in association with Anne Lebourges-Dhaussy (IRD / LEMAR), Jérémie Habasque (IRD / LEMAR) and Gary Vargas (UFRPE). Eighteen students and researchers from six nationalities (Brazil, Cape Verde, Colombia, France, Peru and the UK) participated (Task 2.2). This capacity building was necessary to help students processing data collected in Brazilian waters, in particular to map hot spots for fish, zooplankton, gelatinous (WP, Task 2.3.).

For Jérémie Habasque this mission in Recife was also a first contact with local students before a second mission planned in April 2019, to bring support in multifrequency acoustic data classification and valuation of their results.

In addition we continued the integration of data from previous projects (e.g. Acoustic Along the Brazilian Coast surveys) in the PADDLE database (Task 2.3). To foster interactions we organised a multidisciplinary WS on November 27-28 at UFPE with participants from UFPE, UFRPE, IRD.

We continued the writing of the Deliverable 2.1 (Report on tropical Atlantic marine ecosystem dynamics in the last decades).

Important work on writing publications with colleagues from the UFRPE and UFPE was performed (see D2.2). We can mention the drafting or the finalisation of the writing of the following publications:

  • Preparation of a paper (Dossa et al.) on current dynamics
  • Preparation of a paper (Assunção et al.) on the thermohaline structure
  • Salvetat J., Lebourges-Dhaussy A., Travassos P., Gastauer S., Roudaut G., Vargas G., Bertrand A. In situtarget strength measurement of the black triggerfish Melichtys niger and the ocean triggerfish Canthidermis sufflamen. Marine and Freshwater Research. DOI: 10.1071/MF19153.
