The first interdisciplinary workshop of the PADDLE project has been co-organised with the "Réseau des parlementaires pour l’environnement" (APPEL-IUCN Sénégal) on March 28 and 29, 2019. It gathered around 30 participants.
During the first day, it enabled to highlight the importance of comparative approaches to the legal system of a region. The second day was dedicated to the study of the opportunities and limits of Marine Spatial Planning (MSP).
The project PADDLE has been presented by the coordinator, Marie Bonnin. The professor Helena Calado has then introduced the concept of MSP. The mapping of environmental law has been explained by Marie Bonnin. This atlas shows the development of marine environmental law in Cabo Verde, and will serve as basis to any MSP initiative. The professor Helena Calado detailed the importance of potential social impacts of MSP and the interest in developing social impact assessments along with environmental impact assessments. Maria Auxilia Correia, working in INDP, presented the challenges encountered conducting fishery research in Cabo Verde in a context of development of human activities at sea. The afternoon has been the occasion for the participants to discuss the future potential legal instruments.
