TRACCOS focuses on the transdisciplinary assessment of governance issues associated with the deployment of marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) techniques at the international level. It focuses in particular on two mCDR techniques: ocean alkalinity enhancement and macroalgual cultivation. Qualitative methods are used, including a literature review, semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders (scientists, NGOs, industry, policy makers) from around the world, a PESTEL analysis, and co-construction workshops to identify prospective scenarios, in order to understand the issues associated with funding, the techniques envisaged for Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV), societal acceptability, and the governance framework for deploying mCDR strategies. The project aims to highlight the similarities and differences between the issues identified in the literature and those put forward by stakeholders, as well as the diversity of perspectives across stakeholder categories and geographical origin. In addition, the project explores stakeholders’ perceptions of the influence of the characteristics of mCDR techniques on their governability.
