Panorama
Ioli Skouroliakou holds a PhD in Marine Sciences, Biology and Ecology from ULCO (2023), under the supervision of Urania Christaki, where she investigated the ecology of coastal phytoplankton blooms using a combination of morphological and molecular approaches. She then worked as a postdoctoral researcher and lecturer at Ghent University, Belgium. During this time, she studied protist communities in the heavily anthropized Belgian part of the North Sea, comparing sequencing technologies to identify the most effective approaches for environmental monitoring. She also gained experience in PhD supervision, teaching, and grant writing.
From 2025 to 2026, she worked at IFREMER on the impact of human pollution on coastal microbial communities during the Anthropocene across Europe, as part of the TREC and BIOcean5D projects under the supervision of Dr. Raffaele Siano. Her work focused on the use of ancient sedimentary DNA (sedaDNA) to investigate past microbial communities.
She is now an international post-doc ISblue Fellow at LEMAR, under Johann Lavaud’s supervision to work on the impact of Heatwaves on microbiAl muDflat communities and their Ecosystem Services . HADES is an international and interdisciplinary project bridging biological and social-ecological sciences, combing field sampling, heatwave experiments, and ecosystem services modeling.
