Tunas are pelagic fishes rich in protein and omega-3 fatty acids, but their position at the top of marine food webs exposes them to some chemical contaminants, particularly methylmercury. Chronic exposure to this contaminant can have neurological and cardiovascular effects in humans. In this context, the role of selenium—particularly in the form of selenoneine—in mitigating the toxic effects of methylmercury has raised interest. Recent research also suggests that some pelagic predators may detoxify methylmercury in vivo through selenium-dependent mechanisms.
IMPACT aims to:
- Understand the in vivo mechanisms underlying mercury–selenium interactions in tunas;
- Assess consumers’ exposure to methylmercury and other chemical contaminants (PFAS and toxic trace metals), as well as the nutritional benefits (selenoneine, omega-3 fatty acids, iodine, and vitamins) associated with tuna consumption;
- Investigate heterogeneity in tuna consumers’ knowledge and motivations, and their sensitivity to different shocks.
