The aim of the RESPI project is to develop and validate new physiological indicators applicable for the management of fish species, using the European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) as a case study. To achieve this goal, the project investigates the energy metabolism of wild animals at two levels of integration: whole-animal oxygen consumption and, at the cellular level, by measuring the efficiency of mitochondria in producing energy, namely ATP. As ATP serves as the common currency, fueling nearly all vital cellular processes, including all metabolic reactions and activities of an individual (Fig.1). Through the establishment of metabolic performance curves (whole-animal and mitochondrial), the RESPI project aims to provide new robust tools capable of predicting the thermal sensitivity of juvenile sea bass in their nursery, a critical area for the development and survival of juveniles.
