Training of trainers

The training of the trainers of the Moroccan staff who will be involved in the teaching of the future Master ScolaMAR program is mainly carried out by the "Job-shadowing" activity within the European partner universities.
The ScolaMAR project provides for 48 staff mobilities of 2 weeks maximum from Morocco to Europe, namely 12 staff per Moroccan university.

Technical Mobility:

30 Moroccan staff will benefit from mobility opportunities to Europe to experience “job-shadowing” during 2 weeks. They will follow a professor during his lessons in which there is technical and practical training component. At the end of their mobility, each participant will write an activity and mobility report on her/his experience that will be used to develop the training modules for the Master curriculum.

Pedagogical Mobility:

18 Moroccan staff members (teachers or pedagogical engineer) will benefit from mobility opportunities to European universities. During 2-week job shadowing, they will observe, learn and work with their European partners to master a pedagogical skill or a methodology. At the end of his/her mobility, each participant will write a mobility report on her/his experience. This report should take the form of a synthesized tool-kit for innovative module that states the pre-requisites, the contents, the resources to be allocated (in time, budget, internal or external staff, materials) and issues that must be anticipated to develop such innovative pedagogical modules in a new environment.

As part of the project activities, the University of El Jadida organized from 1 to 5 October 2018 a field school on "Data Management in the Marine and Coastal Domain" in the Oualidia Lagoon, south of El Jadida.

For one week, 24 Moroccan teachers (Tangier, Rabat, El Jadida, Kenitra) and 6 European teachers (Cadiz, Algarve, Brest) offered practical and theoretical workshops to train 32 Moroccan students in the use of equipment dedicated to marine and coastal observation (Stratabox sediment depth sounder, single beam sonar for bathymetry, sampling of water and sediments in the lagoon, tide recorder, flow, salinity, etc.). Well beyond the learning of the Master's and PhD students present at this field school, the objective of this activity is to train the future trainers who will be involved in the Master ScolaMAR. This school is intended to be integrated into the first year programme of this Master's degree and repeated every year in the lagoon of Oualidia.

On the program: practical parts on board small boats on the lagoon for the acquisition of geophysical data, workshops for the observation of the lagoon's aquatic ecosystem, as well as geomorphological observation of the coastal zone.

The programme of this field school, which began on 1 October 2018 with a day of presentation of the ScolaMAR project at the El Jadida Faculty of Sciences, was followed by workshops at the Oualidia lagoon site from 2 to 5 October 2018. During this week, students and teachers were able to participate in practical parts on board small boats (3) on the lagoon for the acquisition of geophysical data (Stratabox and Sonar single beam), workshops for the observation of the lagoon's aquatic ecosystem (sediment sampling by bucket, Water sampling by Niskins bottle, geomorphological observation of the coastal zone (levelling by DGPS) but also practical workshops based on measurements made on the lagoon were organised within the INRH observatory in Oualidia.

These workshops ended with a meeting of the project coordination committee on Friday at 12 noon.

As part of the WP4-Integrative approach, the ScolaMAR project will organize two international scientific conferences bringing multidisciplinary scientists and various socio-economic actors on a specific issue to focus on the inregrative dimension within the Integrated Coastal Zones Management (IZCM). Indeed, integration occurs in and between many different levels: among disciplines, among socio-economic sectors, between land and water elements of the coastal zone, among levels of government, and between nations.

These conferences will raise awareness across a broad public, from staff to students to the importance of integrating a large diversity of point of views, data and issues related to the Moroccan implementation of its ICZM policy. The first event will be organized in Kenitra in April 2018. The topic will be “Climate change and its implication to Smart ICZM and sustainable blue growth”. The second conference will be about “Coastal risks: risks for societies’ facing environmental changes versus risks for nature under human pressure”, in April 2019 in Rabat.

Conference on Climate Change

and its implication on Integrative Coastal Zone Management and sustainable Blue Growth

 Organised from 18 to 20 April 2018 at the University Ibn Tofail in Kenitra, the first conference gathered more than 150 people (teachers, students, guests) at the opening session. The conference programme, based on the integration of scientific knowledge and expertise in coastal management, provided students with solid scientific training and a range of tools to address key environmental and socio-economic issues concerning sustainable coastal development in Morocco and Europe.

9 Moroccan speakers, 9 European speakers, 40 students from the four Moroccan universities partners of the project as well as about ten guests (Tangier-Med, Research Institute for Development, National Agency for the Development of Aquaculture, National Institute of Fisheries Research) participated in this three-days conference.

As part of the development of the RISCOMAR online course (Small Private Online Course/SPOC) which will focus on coastal risks in Morocco, teachers from the four Moroccan universities have begun the video recording phase at the Faculty of Science of the University of Kenitra.

The University of Kenitra which coordinates this activity has a recording studio and the necessary tools for the construction and development of online courses.

The activity, which will be divided into 7 weeks of courses, will be finalised by the end of March 2019 with the objective of launching it at the beginning of the 2019/2020 academic year, as part of the future Master's programme.
