Abstract :

Arctic marine ecosystems are experiencing profound changes driven by climate change and increasing anthropogenic activity. Prominent features of stressors in the Arctic include observed changes in oceanographic variables as well as other ecological disturbances which are anticipated to continue and accelerate in coming years. Such changes are expected to substantially assist in the expansion of non-indigenous species northward. Of major concern is that the thawing Arctic waters enable economic development in the region and increase the risk for human-mediated exogenous arrivals. Invasive species are considered one of the most important inadvertent drivers of biodiversity loss and are known for exerting strong impacts on human welfare. When those species are also viewed as valuable resources that support local economies, conservation agents and resource managers are charged with balancing the socio-economic benefits of harvesting with the declining ecosystem health caused by the invasion. With those challenges in mind, this work addresses determinants of economic and ecological changes in Arctic marine resources as a result of the way commercially valued invasive species are managed. The work presented is motivated by the Red King Crab invasion in the Barents Sea, but has broader implications. It addresses bioeconomic trade-offs associated with invasive species management - a challenge for which losses from the invasion are just one input. It seeks to inform ways to achieve socially desirable outcomes by assessing policies and decision-making processes at the intersection between conservation of Arctic marine ecosystems and socioeconomic welfare of fishing communities. The approach reappraises the role of commercial harvesting as a management tool for controlling invasive species. The lack of knowledge and scientific consensus about features of the invasion does not reduce the need to act on little information. The institutional structures in place for combatting invasive species in the Arctic have many gaps. Invasive species are externalities to trade and economic development, and as such call for regulatory intervention across political and national boundaries that require incentive-compatible cooperation. Such cooperation may be particularly difficult in light of imperfect information about the net benefits of prevention of invasive species. Those benefits are also unequally distributed according to bio-economic conditions and therefore warrant more research into optimal control frameworks that can assist in decision-making and assessment of management strategies. Understanding the economic incentives, the different stakeholders' interests, and the underlying trade-offs behind biological invasions is central to optimal management and efficient allocation of resources.

The Science Manager of AWI's Directorate's Office just informed about a call for three positions at the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research Bremerhaven:

1) Ecology of Antarctic Benthic Habitats
2) The Role of Meroplankton in sustaining benthic assemblages in a changing Arctic Ocean
3) Statistical solutions to environmental and climate data analysis
4) Computational solutions for Earth System Modeling

The program is aimed at young researchers who completed their doctorate between two and six years ago. Periods of child-rearing that fall within the postdoc phase can be credited with up to two years per child.

In addition, candidates must have relevant experience abroad: At least six months should have been spent continuously working internationally, whether during the doctoral or postdoctoral phase. Periods of earning an academic degree abroad or coordinating a major international project will also be considered.

The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Government of India, is hosting the SCAR Open Science Conference 2022.

We would like to invite you to contribute to a special volume of the Journal of Micropaleontology, with a working title of “Advances in Antarctic chronology, paleoenvironment, and paleoclimate using microfossils: Results from recent coring campaigns”. This volume will focus on studies resulting from recent scientific ocean drilling and oceanographic expeditions to the Antarctic, including International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expeditions 374, 379, and 382, as well as the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration, among others. This special volume will focus on recent studies utilizing microfossils for a variety of applications (e.g. assemblage studies, paleoecology, biostratigraphy, geochemistry, etc.) to improve our knowledge of Antarctic climate evolution over the Neogene and Quaternary.

The Journal of Micropalaeontology (JM) is an established international journal covering all aspects of microfossils and their application to both applied studies and basic research. They welcome submissions relating to microfossils and their application to palaeoceanography, palaeoclimatology, palaeobiology, evolution, taxonomy, environmental change and molecular phylogeny. Owned by The Micropalaeontological Society (TMS), the scope of the journal is broad, demonstrating the application of microfossils to solving broad geoscience issues. The Journal of Micropalaeontology is committed to the open-access model of publishing. This ensures free web access to the results of research and maximum visibility for published papers. However, it requires the author or a supporting institution to pay the costs of the review process, typesetting, web publication, and long-term archiving. The price per page for a Word submission is €60 (for TMS members) or €70 (for non-members).

We hope that this special volume will include at least 15–20 papers, and we also strongly encourage review papers for groups of papers relating to a single expedition or campaign. Papers will be published upon acceptance, with a virtual special volume created after the final paper is available (at which time copies of printed volumes can be ordered). We anticipate that the special volume will be open for submissions from approximately February to December 2022. If you and your research group are interested in submitting to this special volume, please email Denise Kulhanek (denise.kulhanek@ifg.uni-kiel.de) with the following information by 3 December 2022: proposed title, authors, and brief description/abstract. Interpreting past climate using Antarctic and Greenland sediment cores

Val Stanley (Oregon State University), Denise Kulhanek (University of Kiel) and Trevor Williams (Texas A&M University) are organizing a glacial sediment core school for graduate students and early career scientists using the Southern Ocean and Greenland/Arctic core collections in the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) and Oregon State University (OSU) core repositories. An official announcement with more information and details for how to apply will be released soon. Funding for U.S. participants is available from U.S. National Science Foundation funding to the OSU-MGR and from the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) INStabilities & Thresholds in ANTarctica (INSTANT) Programme for international participants.

The primary goals of this summer school are to:

• Train graduate students and early career scientists to describe and interpret the stratigraphy of Antarctic and Greenland/Arctic marine sediment cores in the context of ice, climate, and source-to-sink processes to improve our understanding of past and future climate.
• Prepare these scientists for upcoming Greenland and Antarctic expeditions and for their future careers as polar researchers. 

 

The daily schedule will include lectures on a theme in the morning, followed by a hands-on activity related to the theme. The afternoon will consist of hands-on laboratory activities that will include core description (both macro- and microscopic), chronostratigraphy, and physical properties/downhole logging. Daily themes will target different time intervals of interest and different depositional environments.

Those who are participating on upcoming expeditions will benefit the most, but the school will be open to everyone. We are planning for approximately 15 U.S. and 10 international attendees, with an application process to determine participation.
