The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Government of India, is hosting the SCAR Open Science Conference 2022.

The conference will be held online from 1-10 August.

The theme of the conference is "Antarctica in a Changing World".

The SCAR Open Science Conference 2022 will feature a comprehensive schedule of meetings, symposia, virtual side events and social activities, daily plenary lectures and poster sessions in an innovative online format.

Dear Colleagues, 

We would like to invite you to contribute to a special volume of the Journal of Micropaleontology, with a working title of “Advances in Antarctic chronology, paleoenvironment, and paleoclimate using microfossils: Results from recent coring campaigns”. This volume will focus on studies resulting from recent scientific ocean drilling and oceanographic expeditions to the Antarctic, including International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expeditions 374, 379, and 382, as well as the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration, among others. This special volume will focus on recent studies utilizing microfossils for a variety of applications (e.g. assemblage studies, paleoecology, biostratigraphy, geochemistry, etc.) to improve our knowledge of Antarctic climate evolution over the Neogene and Quaternary.

The Journal of Micropalaeontology (JM) is an established international journal covering all aspects of microfossils and their application to both applied studies and basic research. They welcome submissions relating to microfossils and their application to palaeoceanography, palaeoclimatology, palaeobiology, evolution, taxonomy, environmental change and molecular phylogeny. Owned by The Micropalaeontological Society (TMS), the scope of the journal is broad, demonstrating the application of microfossils to solving broad geoscience issues. The Journal of Micropalaeontology is committed to the open-access model of publishing. This ensures free web access to the results of research and maximum visibility for published papers. However, it requires the author or a supporting institution to pay the costs of the review process, typesetting, web publication, and long-term archiving. The price per page for a Word submission is €60 (for TMS members) or €70 (for non-members).

We hope that this special volume will include at least 15–20 papers, and we also strongly encourage review papers for groups of papers relating to a single expedition or campaign. Papers will be published upon acceptance, with a virtual special volume created after the final paper is available (at which time copies of printed volumes can be ordered). We anticipate that the special volume will be open for submissions from approximately February to December 2022. If you and your research group are interested in submitting to this special volume, please email Denise Kulhanek (denise.kulhanek@ifg.uni-kiel.de) with the following information by 3 December 2022: proposed title, authors, and brief description/abstract. Please feel free to forward this invitation to your colleagues who may be interested in the opportunity.

Interpreting past climate using Antarctic and Greenland sediment cores

Val Stanley (Oregon State University), Denise Kulhanek (University of Kiel) and Trevor Williams (Texas A&M University) are organizing a glacial sediment core school for graduate students and early career scientists using the Southern Ocean and Greenland/Arctic core collections in the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) and Oregon State University (OSU) core repositories. An official announcement with more information and details for how to apply will be released soon. Funding for U.S. participants is available from U.S. National Science Foundation funding to the OSU-MGR and from the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) INStabilities & Thresholds in ANTarctica (INSTANT) Programme for international participants.

The primary goals of this summer school are to:

• Train graduate students and early career scientists to describe and interpret the stratigraphy of Antarctic and Greenland/Arctic marine sediment cores in the context of ice, climate, and source-to-sink processes to improve our understanding of past and future climate.
• Prepare these scientists for upcoming Greenland and Antarctic expeditions and for their future careers as polar researchers. 

 

The daily schedule will include lectures on a theme in the morning, followed by a hands-on activity related to the theme. The afternoon will consist of hands-on laboratory activities that will include core description (both macro- and microscopic), chronostratigraphy, and physical properties/downhole logging. Daily themes will target different time intervals of interest and different depositional environments.

Those who are participating on upcoming expeditions will benefit the most, but the school will be open to everyone. We are planning for approximately 15 U.S. and 10 international attendees, with an application process to determine participation.
