This second step made it possible to achieve four workshops of qualitative assessment of coastal ecosystem services (WPs 3 and 4). The main objective was to briefly introduce the students to ecosystems identification, ecosystem services cocept, ecosystem services cascade, ecosystem services assessment matric and qualitative assessment. The worshopes were performed between the 27 and the 29 of August 2019, at the Oceanograpy Department. Each session consisted of a PowerPoint presentation of 20 minutes, followed by a “hands-on” activity of 1 hour and a hald. During “hands-on” activity the students developed individual drawings of coastal areas. Subsequently, they identified the main land uses and ecosystems being depicted in their drawings. Then, they built the ecosystem service assessment matric, wherein they evaluated the flux of ecosystem services in relation with each land use/ecosystem, using a qualitative scale from 0 to 5 (Burkhard et al., 2009, 2012). We finalized the exercerice with a group discussion guided vy five questions, that aimed to gather their opinions about the ecosystem services concept, the “hands-on” activity and about the use of the assessment matric for their own research. Additionally, students were also asked to discuss the main challenges, problems and users of the coastal areas of Pernambuco. As a result, the workshops captured the interest of 47 undergraduate and graduate students. The attendees were able to critize the ecosystem services concept, visualize the spatial disctribution of ecosystems ad land uses and reflect upon nature-society relation. Overall, theses activities contributed with new knowledge to the traditional curriculum of undergraduate and graduate studies of Biology and Oceanography at the UFPE. Workshops were organized thanks to the support of master students Suelen Silva, Eduardo Araújo, Mar Aberto (Empresa Junior), PhD student Camila Brasil, Prof. Beatrice Ferreira and Prof. Alex
