Biography

Sophie Bertrand (IRD, UMR Marbec, senior researcher) is a marine ecologist, with a specific focus in megafauna behaviour and movement ecology. She worked > 15 years in the Humboldt Current System, studying the relative impacts of the environmental variability and the anchovy fishery on the ecology and population dynamics of seabirds and marine mammals. One of the final target of this research was to provide ecosystem-based recommendations to the managers of the fishery. Since 2015 she started a new research program in Northeastern Brazil. In this region, a key question is the overlapping of conservation issues and multiple human activities at sea (fisheries, tourism, oil and gaz exploitation, coastal urbanization, etc.), calling for marine spatial approaches.
