Artistic Project

A scientific team of biologists is going to work in arctic regions on indicators of climate variations recorded in bivalves shell. Researchers elaborate theory about the importance of sea ice on structure and functioning of the organisms living on the seabed.

Beyond the scientific objectives that the team intends to achieve, the originality of this project lies in its interdisciplinary approach: research in ecology being at the service of the visual and plastic creation. This project provides an opportunity for scientists and artists to work together on issues about knowledge creation and climate change. It will be an opportunity to transgress the limits of different disciplines.

Erwan Amice, Seaman, diver or photographer… why not the three?

He is assistant engineer at the CNRS, responsible for the at sea activities of the European Institute of Marine Studies. Barded of cameras and special equipments, it supports scientific teams on many missions around the world to bring splendid images. Stung by the virus of the poles, he developed a passion for scientific programs in these extreme environments where everything remains to be discovered ... He has published dozens of images in the specialized press, in various books and be exposed in several exhibitions. His images are visible on the website of the CNRS’ photo library.

Jean Gaumy, MAGNUM Photos, Photographer

Known for his coverage of the maritime life ("Pleine Mer", "L'Abeille Flandre" ...), for  the links it has established with scientific communities in the polar environment (boarding on the icebreaker Amundsen in 2007) and for his feature documentary work aboard a nuclear submarine attack, Jean Gaumy is the photographer who is following  the team of B.B Polar researchers. With Jean Gaumy, there is a clear parallel between the nature of his work and that he proposes to carry out within the research team: it will, like them, collect, analyze, synthesize and then infer from this experience a personal and "subjective" form .... The experience he has accumulated, his way to approach such situations, will complement and enrich the scientific project itself.

Sandrine Paumelle, Visual artist

Sandrine Paumelle live and work in Paris in the artistic neighborhood of Belleville.

"Dans la terre je puise et m’épuise

Les mains avides de racines

Fouillant le sol et les feuilles humides

J’enfouis et déterre

Eclaboussant la toile de ces matières

Parfois acides. "

Sandrine Paumelle will focus its work on notions of full and empty / outside-inside. She will implement four in situ projects. Just as scientists in mission, the work she wants to achieve will be possible only in the field alongside researchers. She will observe how everyone settles, finds his place, manages his daily, finds his refuge in this context.
