Research
IUEM plays an important role in French and European marine science. Benefiting from a unique environment where more than half of the national potential in this field is found, its teams work on all the important issues in research and cover all the oceans of the world. All disciplines that study the marine environment and the activities that take place there, are represented at IUEM: physics, chemistry, biology, genetics, ecology, biochemistry, geophysics, geology, geography, law, economics, et cetera.
The laboratories
IUEM counts seven laboratories: six joint research units (UMR) where scientists from various organizations such as UBO, CNRS, Ifremer and IRD work together, and one associated team (EA) of UBO:
- LPO : laboratory of physics of the oceans
- Lebham : laboratory of ecophysiology and biotechnology of halophytes and seaweeds
- Lemar : laboratory of sciences of the marine environment
- Domaines océaniques : oceanic domains
- LM2E : laboratory of microbiology of extreme environments
- Géomer : the Brest section of UMR 6554 LETG (Coast, environment, remote sensing and geomatics)
- Amure : Center of marine law and economics
Interdisciplinary research
Research at IUEM is focused on four areas, involving interdisciplinary teams from several laboratories.

Joint service unit
To support IUEM in its scientific ambitions, a joint service unit was created in 2008. The service unit manages the equipment and facilities and comprises staff of several services, all dedicated to research, observation and education.
